Jaipur - How to get there:

By Airways:
Sanganer Airport around 11 km is the main air gateway to Jaipur. Delhi-258km, Mumbai-1202km. have direct flights to Jaipur. Many airlines also connects other major cities like Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, kolkata to Jaipur.

By Railways:
Jaipur and other cities in Rajasthan are very well connected to Delhi through rail transport. Shatabdi Express, Pink City Express and other Jaipur-Delhi trains leave from Old Delhi Railway Station in Delhi, but there is no better option then the Palace-on-Wheel, which leaves Delhi on every Wednesday.

By Roadways:
Jaipur city is connected to most of the tourist destinations in Rajasthan. Jaipur is part of the Golden Travel Circuit of India that includes Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. Delhi-Jaipur national highway is one of the finest roads in India. A normal journey takes about five hours. There are also good bus services from Delhi and other important north Indian cities to Jaipur.

By Other Means:
Autos and Taxis are the most convenient ways of moving inside the city as well as to reach some of the excursions located in the proximity. To move inside the city, you can also look for cycle rickshaws, which are easily available and much cheaper than other transportation modes.

About
Jaipur is an attractive destination for tourists in the desert sands of Rajasthan. It is widely known as “Pink City” since it was painted pink to welcome Prince Albert, the consort of queen Victoria of England who visited India in 1883 AD. The city was found by Jai Singh II,one of the greatest ruler in 1727. It is the only city in the world which is divided into nine rectangular sectors symbolizing nine divisions of universe in accordance with ‘shilpa shastra’-epochal treatise of Hindu architecture.

History
Jaipur was built in 1727 by king Jai Singh, after whom it was named. Its most striking feature is the pink wash applied to the buildings, giving Jaipur its universal title, the Pink City. Jaipur, a royal city with its fairy - tale palaces, rugged fortresses display remarkable harmony in architectural splendor. Jaipurs craft, especially lacquer bangles are famous all over the world. Some of the palaces, once the residence of Maharajas have been converted to heritage hotels.

Tourist Attractions

City Palace
The City Palace is a historic landmark. The carved arches are supported by grey-white marble columns studded with floral motifs in gold and coloured stones. Two elephants carved in marble guard the entrance, where retainers whose families have served generations of rulers are at hand to serve as guides. It also has an art gallery with a fine collection of paintings, carpets, royal paraphernalia and rare astronomical works in Arabic, Persian, Latin and Sanskrit, acquired by Sawai Jai Singh-II for his study of planets and their movements.

Jantar Mantar
Jantar mantar is one of Jai Singhs five remarkable observatories. Constructed with stone and marble its complex instruments whose settings and shapes are precisely and scientifically designed represent the high points of Medieval Indian astronomy. The Ram Yantras used for gauging altitudes are unique in their isolation. this is the largest of the five observatories founded by Sawai Jai Singh-II in various parts of the country. Major Yantras or instruments that you can watch moving clockwise are: Small Samrat, Dhruva, Narivalya, The Observers Seat, Small Kranti, Raj Unnathamsa, Disha, Dakshina, Large Samrat, Rashivalayas, Jai Prakash, Small Ram, Large Ram Yantra, Diganta, Large Kranti.

Hawa Mahal
Built by the poet king Sawai Pratap Singh, the Hawa Mahal is the most strikingly designed monument in Jaipur. What is seen from the Sireh Deorhi Bazaar is the multiniched five storey high backside of the complex. It was conceived to provide adequate vantage position behind delicate stone carved jali screens to the palace women for watching the royal processions passing through the bazaar below.


Albert Hall
It is situated in the beautiful garden of Jaipur city, Ram Niwas Bagh. It was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh in the year 1886 under the drought relief work of Rs 4 Lacs. The design of the building was done by Sir Swinton Jaicob. Presently the hall is used for museum purpose.

Jal Mahal
A tiny palace romantically located in the middle of a small lake, this was supposed to be a hunting lodge for the royal family. It can only be viewed from the banks of the lake.

Galtaji
Beyond the gardens amidst the low hills guarding the city lies the old pilgrim centre of Galtaji. Temples, pavilions and holy kunds ( natural springs and reservoirs ) do the serene green landscape. The small temple of the Sun God, built by Diwan Kriparam on the top of the highest peak, is visible from all parts of the city.

Birla Planetarium
Equipped with modern computerized projection system, the planetarium offers unique audio-visual educational entertainment. A Science Museum is also a part of this one of the most modern planetarium in India.

Laxmi Narayan Temple
In the southern horizon is a privately owned hilltop fort of Moti Doongari shaped like a scotish castle. At the foot of the hill, Laxmi Narayan Temple, beautifully built in sparking white marble, is located.

Nahargarh Fort
Beyond the hills of Jaigarh stand the Fort of Nahargarh like a watchful sentinel guarding Sawai Jai Singhs beautiful city. Much of the original structures are now in ruins, but the lovely building added by sawai Ram Singh II and Sawai Madho Singh II still survive.

Amer Fort
Amer Fort is the complex of palaces, halls, pavilions, gardens and temples, which were built by Raja Man Singh, Mirza Raja Jai Singh and Sawai Jai Singh over a period of about two centuries. The palace complex rising from the placid waters of the Mootha lake is approached through a steep path, now often traversed by tourists on elephant-back, to Singh palace and Jaleb Chowk. Two flights of stairs rise from one end to the chowk, one leading to the elegant temple of Shila Mata and other to the palace complex. The image of the Mother Goddess worshipped with reverence by thousands of devotees every day was brought from Jessore in East Bengal ( now in Bangladesh ) by raja Man Singh and installed here.

Amber Fort
Located on the hills outside Jaipur, Amber Fort is a magnificent place. Raja Man Singh began building the fort in 1600 AD and what stand today with magnificent glory are the complex of palaces, halls pavilions gardens and temples built by Raja Man Singh, Mirja Raja Jai Singh and Sawai Jai Singh over a period of one hundred and twenty five years. Built in red sandstone and white marble, the structure is a blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture. The major attraction of the fort is the Shesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), a palace known for its craftsmanship in mirrors with large ramparts, terraces and pavilions. Dilaram Bagh & Mohan Bari gardens, well laid in the Moghul style, are a feast to the eyes from the terrace of the palace. There is a temple of Shila Mata inside the palace complex. Raja Man Singh brought the image of the Mother Goddess, the deity of the temple, from Jessore in Lower Bengal.

Jaigarh
Jaigarh is on the western side of Jaipur. It is one of the few military structures of mediaeval India preserved almost intact. Jai Singh, in 1726, built the extensive watchtowers and gateways of Jaigarh. It was the royal treasury for several years. Asias largest cannon on wheels is exhibited here. The intricate water supply and storage system that is considered a marvel of planning is also of interest to visitors. The fort has palaces, gardens, open and covered reservoirs, a granary, an armoury, a cannon foundry and several temples. It also has its own museum and provides an excellent view of Amber palace.

Bairath
86km from Jaipur on the Shahpura-Alwar Road, Bairath is an important historical place with the excavated remains of a circular Buddhist temple. It is believed to be one of the earliest known temples in India. The town has relics from the Mauryan, Mughal and Rajput periods. Other attractions are a mint built by Akbar, a Mughal garden and a remarkable monument with painted chhatris and walls built by Jahangir.

Ramgarh Lake
Ramgarh Lake is a huge artificial lake created by constructing a high bund amidst tree-covered hills. It is located 32km northeast of Jaipur. Boating in the lake is available. The temple of Jamwa Mata, the ruins of the old fort and its beautiful landscape makes Ramgarh worth a visit.

Vidyadhar Garden
Located near the Sisodia Gardens is the beautiful Vidyadhar Garden, which unfolds itself in the valley. It is named after Vidyadhar Bhatacharya the architect of Jaipur.
