Rishikesh - How to get there:

By Airways:
The nearest airport is at Dehradun, which is 25 Km away from the Rishikesh. Daily flights operate from Delhi.

By Railways:
Rishikesh is connected by rail via Haridwar (24 kms), to Howrah, Bombay, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Dehradun and other cities.

By Roadways:
By road Rishikesh to Haridwar 24 kms, Dehradun 47 kms, Mussoorie 77 kms, Badrinath 301 kms (Son Prayag), Kedarnath 228 kms, Gangotri 258 kms, Yamunotri 288 kms (Hanuman Chatti), Srinagar 105 kms, Joshimath 252 kms.

Rishikesh is located at a height of about 1360 feet above sea level in the northern part of Uttaranchal. It is 238 km northeast of Delhi and 24 km north of Haridwar and spreads on the right banks of the Ganges, at its confluence with the Chandrabhaga stream. Rishikesh is known as the yoga capital of the world.

History
Legend has it that the sage Raibhya Rishi did severe penance and consequently, God appeared to him in the form of Hrishikesh. Rishikesh also represents the site where Lord Vishnu vanquished the demon Madhu. The place is known as the Tapo Bhumi or the place for meditation of the Gods. Tapovan, on the other bank of the Ganges, houses a temple to Lakshmana. It is believed that Lakshmana, the younger brother of Lord Rama, carried out penances here. The Neelkanth Mahadev temple is believed to be the site where Lord Shiva had drunk the venom that came out during the churning of the ocean. In the 1960s, the place came into limelight as the place where the pop group Beatles met their guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Tourist Attractions

Lakshman Jhula
Lakshman Jhula is a hanging bridge on the river Ganges that flows here. According to legends, Lakshman the brother of Lord Ram crossed this river with the help of a hanging bridge made of jute. The present suspended bridge was built in the year 1939 at the same place.

Ram Jhula
It is another suspended bridge close to Lakshman Juhla. This suspended bridge was recently build between Shivanand Ashram and Sawarg Ashram. It is similar to the Lakshman Jhula. Ram Juhla is also known as Shivanand Jhula.

Gita Bhavan
It is situated beside Lakshman Jhula. The Gita Bhavan is a beautifully constructed building housing some attractive statues of characters in Hindu mythology.

Triveni Ghat
It is a bathing place. It is believed that three mountain streams flow together on this spot making the ghat (bank) more sacred. Pilgrims from various places come here to take a dip in the holy water, which is supposed to wash off all their sins.

Ashrams
There are many important ashrams in Rishkesh. Most ashrams are centres for spiritual studies which also calls for Physical disciplines. Some ashrams are monasteries.

Parmarth Niketan
It is is a spiritual haven, resting serenely on the banks of the holy Ganga(Ganges).

Swarg Ashram
Swarg Ashram, with its numerous ashrams, food stalls and shops is a haunt for those looking for insights into religious themes. The newly constructed Ram Jhoola straddles the Ganga at this point.

Bharat Mandir
The Bharat Mandir near Triveni Ghat is reputed to be the oldest temple in Rishikesh. The temples presiding deity is a black stone Vishnu, which is believed to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya when he visited Rishikesh in the 9th century.

Satya Narayan Temple
The idol of Lord Satyanarayan has been enshrined inside the temple located enroute to Rishikesh, 10 kms. away from Hardwar.

Shatrughan Temple
This is an ancient temple dedicated to Shatrughan, Lord Rams brother and is situated 5 km away from Rishikesh

Excursions

Neelkanth Mahadev
According to mythological accounts, during Sagar Manthan, Lord Shiva drank all the effluent venom here, which turned his throat blue. Hence, Shiva also became famous as Neelkanth. 12 Km far away from Rishikesh, this temple is situated at a height of about 1700 meters.

Chila
It is a sanctuary 20 kms from Rishikesh.

Narendra Nagar
15 kms on the Rishikesh Chamba road is located the historical town of Narendra nagar. This town is of archaeological importance. The town was built by the King of Tehri Narendra Singh. Narendra nagar has recorded many events which have left their impact on the town. The Royal palace and Nandi bull are worth seeing.

Devprayag
The rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirath leave the mountains and merge at this place. From here they get the name Ganga. It has got the ancient Raghunathji Temple.
